Since turning 30 a couple of months ago and never really having had a structured skincare routine, I decided it was time to start trialling some new products in order to find out what works best for me.
I’ve had quite a simple ‘cleanse, tone, moisturise’ routine for most of my adult life. I’ve been fortunate enough not to have suffered with bad acne or anything like that, but I do need to start taking care of my skin. I definitely have some fine lines and wrinkles appearing, as well as dark circles under my eyes. I have quite oily skin too (my makeup tends to slide off towards the end of the day), but at the same time it can sometimes feel quite dry.
There are SO many products out there, it can feel quite overwhelming. For that reason, I’ve decided to start with mini products that come in a kit, before committing to full size versions. I’ll be able to trial out lots of different things, and not worry about forking out too much money before I know if they work out or not.
I’ve heard lots about The Ordinary, some good, some bad. I’ve always wanted to try it so I got my hands on the Healthy Skin Set from lookfantastic.com. It cost me £30.50 which is quite good compared to how much the products are separately. Below are the four products you get in the kit, and my thoughts so far on each.
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10% (30ml)
What is it? A moisturising cream to visibly brighten skin and reduce signs of ageing.
My verdict: It definitely seems to give my skin a little boost, I can see the brightening happening. However I’m yet to see what this does to fine lines and wrinkles.
Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG (30ml)
What is it? And eye cream designed to counteract dark circles and puffiness.
My verdict: AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. After just one use, this actually made my dark circles even worse and my fine lines more noticeable. Won’t be using again.
“Buffet” Multi-Technology Peptide Serum (30ml)
What is it? A serum to target visible signs of ageing, smoothing the complexion and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
My verdict: I was warned by other people that this could make your skin feel ‘furry’. I admit the texture is a little odd, but I definitely see results after using it. It seems to smooth everything out which I really like.
100% Plant-Derived Squalane (30ml)
What is it? A solution to support healthy hydration of the skin with its moisture retention properties. It can also be applied to the hair to increase heat protection, add shine and reduce breakage.
My verdict: My skin feels like its thirst has been quenched after applying this, even after just a few small drops. I’m yet to use on my hair yet though, must give that a try!
FOREO LUNA PLAY
I’ve been quite skeptical about face tools in the past, how much can they actually help? I think a lot of them are over-hyped and over-priced. Having said that, there are some people out there that swear by them, so I felt I needed to give at least one of them a go.
When researching, there were two that kept coming up trumps: the Clarisonic Face Brush and the FOREO LUNA. Both products at full size come in between £80 – £120. I definitely wasn’t going to pay that just to test them out. I did however come across the very mini FOREO LUNA Play on lookfantastic.com. It cost £29 (still pricey if you ask me for the size of it). But I took the plunge, all in the name of research.
This little guy isn’t rechargeable, and you apparently get 100 uses out of it (which equates to around 6 weeks). It’s about the size of a cotton pad and you use it in conjunction with your cleanser. It softly vibrates as you move around the skin – the bristles actually feel very soft and not abrasive in any way.
I was really impressed with how my face felt after just one use, very soft and silky to the touch. I am going to continue to use it and see if it becomes something I can’t live without. If so, I would consider getting the more expensive version which is rechargeable. For now though, this will do! It’s so handy to travel with, very easy to clean and it seems like my makeup applies much easier after I’ve used this. Win!
Are there any new products you’ve introduced into your skincare routine that I should know about? I’m always looking for more recommendations!
